Lying amongst some heavy stones this morning, volunteers found what is believed to be a tombstone for a member of the elite, cavalry unit, the Ala Paetriana.
Archaeologists believe this is the best proof yet that the regiment, the largest on Hadrian’s Wall, used the bath house at what is now Carlisle cricket club.
