Thirds clinch thriller at Wigton to climb in to second place.

A magnificent 49 from 12-year old Charlie Hutchinson rescued Carlisle IIIs after Hogie’s men threatened to blow their own promotion hopes at Wigton on Sunday.

Early on, only Phil Whittred was able to keep the young batter company before Charlie and Stan McAlindon, coming together at 65-6, added 51 for the 7th wicket to help take Carlisle’s total to a respectable 123 from 40 overs.

Tragically, Charlie was stumped from the last ball trying to reach 50, but can be immensely proud of a man of the match performance.

Both boys though showed skill and grit, particularly against the impressive spin of Cameron McGuinness as Wigton IIIs fought to restrict Carlisle’s innings.

‘Boys showing the men how it’s done,’ was skipper Hogarth’s immediate and accurate assessment.

In reply, Wigton lost early wickets to both Hogarth and Will Bell, but stayed in the hunt until four wickets for Jordie Oultram derailed the home side’s hopes.

Eventually, Carlisle clinched a tense, ten run win and moved above Carleton into second place, meaning victory over Patterdale at Edenside next weekend will guarantee promotion to EVCL Division One.

Who said you win nothing with kids?  Well done everyone, fantastic performance.
