Archaeologists overwhelmed by interest in volunteer opportunities.

Applications to take part in the month long archaeological dig at Carlisle cricket club have now closed after an overwhelming response.

Around 70-people attended an open day at the club on Saturday afternoon as new volunteers were signed up and archaeologists explained how the four week excavation will proceed.

After preparatory work this week, the dig itself will get underway next Saturday, with the first batch of community volunteers taking part.

Experts from Wardell-Armstrong say they’re delighted with the level of interest shown in the scheme which will excavate the bath house used by elite Roman soldiers from Hadrian’s Wall.

The project has been paid for by house builder, Fred Story, who’s given £20,000, and by the city council which will provide a further £10,000.

The remains – described as ‘Premier League’ – could become a major tourist asset in the city.
