Fancy helping excavate Roman remains on the site of 4th Century Bath House at Carlisle CC? Now’s your chance….
In just over a week’s time, a second archaeological dig will begin at Edenside to help preserve the remans of a 4th century Roman bath house used by an elite cavalry unit stationed nearby.
And you could be involved.
Experts from Wardell Armstrong are inviting volunteers to take part in the dig which will last throughout September.
In May, as part of preparatory work on our proposed new pavilion, archaeologists were stunned to discover the remnants of a bath house they believe was used by elite soldiers based at a major fort in Stanwix.
They believe the finds are so significant, they could become a tourist attraction in Carlisle, boosting the local economy.
Thanks to a £20,000 donation from building boss, Fred Story, that work will now take place with an extended and much more wide ranging investigation.
Anyone with an interest in history or a desire to help is now invited to register their name via the email address on our specially set up page on this website.
People are needed to log and secure finds, help trowel the trenches and use metal detectors to scan excavated material. Others could help escort guided tours which will take place to keep local people informed.
This is a huge opportunity for the city and for Carlisle Cricket Club. Why not get involved?
