Carlisle’s title showdown at Lindal on Saturday came to a soggy end before the game even got started as heavy rain made the pitch unplayable.

With so much at stake for both sides, Carlisle’s first team players travelled south hoping against hope conditions would improve enough to allow a late start.

But, after several sorties to the middle, the umpires bowed to the inevitable and ruled that puddles on the square would not dry in time.

It means the race to get promoted to the Premier league goes right to the wire next weekend when Lindal travel to Workington and Carlisle visit Ulverston.

Victory for Carlisle at Ulverston will guarantee a return to the top division after a so-far thrilling season.
